What’s New in Kuwait?

It is that time of week again, when we cast our spotlight on an interesting piece of architecture that is planned for somewhere else in the world, other than our homeland. This time, we take a quick look at the plans for the new Wafra Living Complex in Jabriya, State of Kuwait.

This design was presented by AGi Architects in the WAF 2011 competition and claimed first place in the future project/residential category. Judging by the renderings, the building will consist of mainly precast with some minor steel and glass accents. The main high-rise will be set back from the street significantly and have a second L-shaped building wrap around it. This design allows for more outdoor common spaces, makes the building more private, and creates a sense of community within the residence. The large chunks that have been taken out of each building allow for more sunlight penetration and a better view for the residents living on lower levels and in other areas of building overlap.

Another interesting aspect of the design is the “High Square,” a green roof located on the sixth floor. This common area will be the main area to socialize with neighbours, catch some rays, and possibly participate in some sporting activities. The yellow “veil” that will wrap around certain segments of the buildings is both decorative and functional. It will certainly make the building stand out amongst the other mid- and high-rises in the area, while concealing service areas and fire-escape stairs.

The entire project will cover just under 70,000 square feet. Most of the Wafra Living Complex will be residential space, but there will also be a significant amount of retail at street level. Residents will probably have access to the shops via the inner portion of the L-building.

What do you think of this building? Should we be seeing more precast buildings in Toronto instead of the contemporary glass design that is currently trending? Should Toronto have more green roofs? All very important questions to consider.
