Migrating Landscapes in Toronto!

A few months ago, we posted a blog about the very popular Migrating Landscapes and how it was on its way to Toronto’s Brookfield Place.  The expansive project arrived in Toronto on Feb. 6, and it will remain on display until the Friday, Feb 24.

First of all, let us remind you of what Migrating Landscapes is exactly!  The project gave all architects under the age of 45 who immigrated to Canada a chance to design dwellings inspired by their memories and experiences of living somewhere else in the world.  The general idea is that Migrating Landscapes will showcase how multi-cultural Canada is and how as a country, we embrace people from all walks of life.

A national, juried competition selected Migrating Landscapes to be Canada’s official entry at the 2012 Venice Biennale in Architecture.  The Venice Biennale is like the Olympics of architecture — the profession’s most renowned competition recognized as an opportunity for architects to showcase their designs on a global level.  Migrating Landscapes will be an example of Canada’s next generation of architects and is a great opportunity for budding minds to really make a name for themselves.

The exhibition is set as a vast wooden landscape, resembling a skyline.  If you venture in between the rising wood, you will discover many creative dwellings, constructed from all sorts of materials, such as wood, cardboard, wire, concrete, and plastic.  There are many innovative designs that would be very interesting to see developed further.

We would like to give a shout out to Cityzen, one of the Greater Toronto Area’s most active and impressive developers, for being the major sponsor of Migrating Landscapes.  If it were not for great contributions from companies like them, then it would not be possible for Migrating Landscapes to travel the country and display some of the promising work that the young architects of tomorrow have in store for Canada.

We are very pleased that something like Migrating Landscapes exists.  We wish all of the young architects and designers the best of luck, and we look forward to writing about some of their designs a few years down the road.

The exhibition is free and open to everyone.  So, stop in at Brookfield Place anytime between now and the 24th to check it out!
