Gansevoort Hotel in the Distillery District?

Gansevoort Hotel in the Distillery District?

Like the rest of the city, we at the Toronto Star’s NewInHomes.com love everything about the Distillery District. Its combination of heritage buildings, quaint boutiques, and excellent restaurants makes for a great atmosphere. One other thing that we happen to love, personally, is the incorporation of the new and old, be it the shops that now sit inside the historic factories, or the design of the condominiums that are being constructed, which respect the traditional aesthetic of the district.

A few months ago, we wrote a blog entry on 60 Mill St. after a development application was submitted for the property. We could only speculate on the design of the tower, but now we have more details on the project, and are very excited by what we see.

Presented by CityScape and Dundee Realty, and designed by Saucier + Perrotte Architectes, 60 Mill St. will be a 34-storey mixed-use building featuring a hotel and condominium residences. The tower will sit on the existing six-storey heritage building, and will be comprised of 334 suites.

Some renderings display the tower as a glass-clad building, divided into four sections by what seems to be wood or coloured precast. Nothing is confirmed at this point; however, those in the industry expect that the Gansevoort Hotel Group, out of New York, will be part of the project.

Gansevoort has made it known that they are interested in entering the Toronto-hotel scene. They were originally planning to join a developer on Richmond Street, but plans fell through and the site was sold off to another developer.

What stands out the most about this project is the design. With some builders in the Greater Toronto Area happy to sit back and accept a standard of design that doesn’t rock the boat, it’s refreshing to see Saucier + Perrotte taking a bit of a risk by challenging the conventional means by which we build and design condominium towers.

What are your thoughts on the plans for 60 Mill St.?  What are your thoughts on the design?
